Easter always feels a little layered for me. It’s joy… but also reflection.

Growing up in the Philippines, Holy Thursday and Good Friday had this quiet air of sadness. The country is largely Catholic/Christian, and Holy Week felt serious. Reflective. Almost heavy. We focused a lot on Jesus’ suffering.

It really starts from Ash Wednesday. From then on, every Friday was traditionally a fasting day. We only ate fish. As I grew older, I would try to give up something I loved during the 40 days — ice cream, cake, even Facebook at one point 😅 I haven’t really followed through properly in recent years, if I’m honest. Life gets busy.

But Holy Week also meant food memories. Binignit every Friday! I always looked forward to my mum’s version. That one is core memory level.

On Good Friday, there would be the 3pm procession. Then at night, we’d visit seven different churches to pray and pay respects. It was usually done as a group — I remember going with our village community. Saturday midnight mass was packed. Everyone brought candles. Looking back… slightly a fire hazard haha. But it was beautiful. And then we celebrate — Jesus has risen!

Now that I’m in New Zealand, Easter feels different. There are bunnies, egg hunts, chocolate eggs (which I love organising for Little J and our playgroup 🐰). It’s lighter, more playful.

But at the end of the day, Easter is still about Christ.
