Camping at Athenree Hot Springs
A relaxed family camping weekend by the inlet — beach swims, muddy walks, bike practice, hot pools, and market dumplings. An easy, kid-friendly campsite with great facilities and beautiful views. Simple moments, lots of laughs, and just enough chaos to keep it real.
PARENTING IN NZMISCELLANEOUS

We stayed at a family-friendly campsite by the inlet, and honestly, it was such an easy spot for kids. Beautiful views, open space to roam, and just a nice mix of beach + bush + hot pools. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need a strict plan… you just go with the flow (and the weather 😅).
It’s popular with caravans, but there were powered and non-powered sites too. They also had cabins for anyone who wants the camping vibe without the whole tent-packing drama. Respect to that choice, packing up is tiring haha.
🏖 Activities (and a bit of mud drama)
Wednesday – We arrived, settled in, and just took it slow. Quick explore around camp and rest from all the setting up and drive.
Thursday – we explored Bowentown and then headed to Waihi Beach near Island Reserve. It’s such a nice swimming spot and not too crowded. The water was a bit murky that day, but still enjoyable. And of course did the hot pools after. Perfect way to end the day.
It was a shame the inlet across the campsite wasn’t swimmable due to recent flooding — it was crystal clear though. Still, the kids were happy with sand and water. That’s all they really need.
Friday – We went for a walk across the campsite and around the inlet. The views were beautiful. I also loved looking at the houses nearby — I don’t know why, but I just enjoy admiring houses 😂 The walk led to another small playground… BUT before that was a muddy patch. Very squelchy. Very dramatic. Two kids in tears (including J) because shoes were getting dirty. Classic. There were trees along the way too, which the kids happily climbed like little monkeys.
Bike practice also happened! She’s picking it up slowly. Very motivated though, which I love to see. My back is slightly complaining from bending down to help… but L did most of the holding and running behind the pedal bike. MVP.
Saturday – We went to the markets (arrived around 11… rookie mistake). Not much left to buy, but I managed dumplings and ice cream so I call that a win. Kids played at the playground there, then we headed to the beach for a swim. I wanted to try the Beach Trig bush walk but we ran out of time. Next time! After the beach? Back to camp for hot pools again. Of course.
Sunday – Packed up just as drizzle started. Perfect timing. We treated ourselves to breakfast at Flat White café by the beach. A bit pricey, yes, but the views were lovely, food was good, and there’s a playground too — so parents can sit for at least 5 minutes in peace.

🏕 Campsite Facilities & What to Know
The facilities were actually really good and clean.
Powered and non-powered sites available
Lots of caravans around (very popular spot)
Cabins if you don’t want tent life
Plenty of fridge and freezer space
Kayaks available for a gold coin donation
Three barbecues, gas cooker, and even a pizza oven BBQ
Proper towels in the toilets (not paper towels 👏 eco-friendly win)
Great hot pools — clearly our favourite feature
Weather-wise, it was mostly hot and a bit windy. Just rained as we were leaving. So maybe pack layers and don’t trust the forecast too much.
Little Wrap-Up
It was such a laidback weekend. Nothing too fancy, just simple family time — walks, playgrounds, beach swims, hot pools, and a bit of mud chaos. The campsite is really great for families and kids, with enough to keep everyone busy but still relaxed. Definitely one of those places we’d come back to.
